Reed relays use a reed switch (reed switch is an electrical switch operated by an applied magnetic field) as their switching mechanism. The most used types of the reed relays are the “dry” and the “Mercury wetted” reed relays. Mercury wetted relays are position-sensitive and must be mounted according to the manufacturer’s specifications. Also because of the toxicity of liquid mercury, these relays have increasingly fallen into disuse.
